Reverse Pupil Dilation with Ryzumvi in Southgate

Close-up of eyes with text promoting Ryzumvi dilation reversal drops at Phillips Eye Care.Dilating your pupils allows your optometrist to examine the internal structures of your eyes and look for signs of eye disease. However, the temporary blurry vision and light sensitivity that follow dilation can make the rest of your day less comfortable.

Phillips Eye Care offers Ryzumvi® (phentolamine ophthalmic solution) 0.75%, an FDA-approved prescription eye drop used to reverse pharmacologically induced pupil dilation. When administered after an eligible eye exam, Ryzumvi can help your pupils return to their normal size sooner.

What Is Ryzumvi?

Ryzumvi is an alpha-adrenergic blocker approved by the FDA to treat pharmacologically induced mydriasis—the medical term for pupil dilation caused by certain medications used during eye examinations.

Your optometrist administers Ryzumvi after completing the dilated portion of your examination. The medication gradually reduces pupil size, helping shorten the amount of time you experience the effects of dilation.

Ryzumvi does not replace pupil dilation or interfere with your optometrist’s ability to examine your eye health. It is used after the examination or procedure has been completed.

What Are the Benefits of Reversing Pupil Dilation?

The effects of dilated pupils can last for several hours. During that time, you may experience blurry near vision, glare, or increased sensitivity to light.

Ryzumvi may help:

  • Reduce the amount of time your pupils remain dilated
  • Relieve prolonged light sensitivity and visual discomfort
  • Make the period after a dilated eye exam more manageable
  • Help your pupils return to their pre-dilation size sooner

Results vary between patients, and Ryzumvi does not reverse dilation instantly. Your optometrist can explain what you may expect based on the dilating medication used during your examination.

How Does Ryzumvi Work?

Pupil dilation is controlled by muscles in the iris, which is the coloured part of the eye. Dilating eye drops temporarily affect these muscles so the pupil remains open during an examination.

Ryzumvi blocks certain alpha receptors in the iris and helps reduce pupil diameter after dilation. Its effects generally begin within approximately 30 minutes, with the greatest effect typically occurring within 60 to 90 minutes.

Is Ryzumvi Right for You?

Ryzumvi may be an option if your eye examination requires pharmacological dilation and you would prefer to shorten the duration of its effects. Before administering it, your optometrist will consider your eye health, medical history, medications, and the type of dilating drops used.

Ryzumvi is not recommended for patients with active ocular inflammation, such as iritis. Contact lenses must also be removed before the medication is administered and should not be reinserted for at least 10 minutes.

The most commonly reported side effects include temporary stinging or burning when the drops are applied, eye redness, and an unusual taste. Our team will discuss the potential benefits and side effects with you before treatment.

How Much Does Ryzumvi Cost?

Ryzumvi is available at Phillips Eye Care for an additional fee. Insurance coverage can vary, so we encourage you to ask our team about current pricing and payment information before your examination.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ryzumvi

Can pupil dilation be reversed after an eye exam?

  • Yes. Ryzumvi is an FDA-approved prescription eye drop that can reverse pupil dilation caused by certain medications used during an eye examination. It is administered after the dilated portion of the exam is complete.

How quickly does Ryzumvi work?

  • Ryzumvi generally begins working within about 30 minutes. Its maximum effect is typically seen within 60 to 90 minutes, although individual results can vary.

Will my vision return to normal immediately?

  • No. Ryzumvi helps your pupils return to their normal size sooner, but the process is not immediate. You may continue to experience some blurry vision or light sensitivity while the medication takes effect.

Is Ryzumvi safe?

  • Ryzumvi is FDA-approved for reversing pharmacologically induced mydriasis. As with any prescription medication, it can cause side effects and may not be suitable for everyone. Your optometrist will review your eye health and medical history before recommending it.

Can I drive after receiving Ryzumvi?

  • You should not drive until your vision has returned to normal and you feel that you can do so safely. Ryzumvi may shorten the effects of dilation, but it does not guarantee that your vision will immediately be clear enough for driving.

Can children receive Ryzumvi?

  • Ryzumvi is FDA-approved for eligible adults and children aged 3 and older, with age-specific dosing. Your child’s optometrist will determine whether the medication is appropriate based on their examination and health history.

Do I need to request Ryzumvi before my appointment?

  • You can ask about Ryzumvi when scheduling your appointment or speak with our team when you arrive. Your optometrist will determine whether it is appropriate after considering the type of examination and dilating medication being used.
